Multinary group identification

چکیده
Group identification refers to the problem of classifying individuals into groups (e.g., racial or ethnic classification). We consider a multinary group identification model where memberships to three or more groups are simultaneously determined based on individual opinions on who belong to what groups. Our main axiom requires that membership to each group, say the group of J’s, should depend only on the opinions on who is a J and who is not (that is, independently of the opinions on who is a K or an L). This shares the spirit of Arrow’s independence of irrelevant alternatives and therefore is termed independence of irrelevant opinions. Our investigation of multinary group identification and the independence axiom reports a somewhat different message from the celebrated impossibility result by Arrow (1951). We show that the independence axiom, together with symmetry and non-degeneracy, implies the liberal rule (each person self-determines her own membership). This characterization provides a theoretical foundation for the self-identification method commonly used for racial or ethnic classifications. JEL Classification Numbers: C0; D70; D71; D72

Fractional Group Identification∗
We study group identification problems, the objective of which is to classify agents into groups based on individual opinions. Our point of departure from the literature is to allow membership to be fractional, to qualify the extent of belonging. Examining implications of independence of irrelevant opinions, we identify and characterize four nested families of rules. The four families include t...
متن کاملMultinary selenides with unusual coordination environment of bismuth.
New multinary selenides Ae3SnPn2Se8 (Ae = Sr, Ba; Pn = Sb, Bi), Sr8.01Ge2.04Bi7.95Se24, and Sr8YGe2Bi7Se24 were synthesized by solid-state reaction, and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group Pnma (no. 62) for Ae3SnPn2Se8 (Ae = Sr, Ba; Pn = Sb, Bi) and in Pna21 (no. 33) for Sr8.01Ge2.04Bi7.95Se24 and Sr8YGe2B...
متن کاملMicrostructural and Mechanical-Property Manipulation through Rapid Dendrite Growth and Undercooling in an Fe-based Multinary Alloy
Rapid dendrite growth in single- or dual-phase multicomponent alloys can be manipulated to improve the mechanical properties of such metallic materials. Rapid growth of (αFe) dendrites was realized in an undercooled Fe-5Ni-5Mo-5Ge-5Co (wt.%) multinary alloy using the glass fluxing method. The relationship between rapid dendrite growth and the micro-/nano-mechanical properties of the alloy was i...
متن کاملSemiconductor heterostructures and device structures investigated by photoreflectance spectroscopy
In this review, we present the photoreflectance (PR) spectroscopy as a powerful tool for investigations of bulk semiconductors and semiconductor heterostructures. We discuss the application of PR technique to investigation of various properties of semiconductors, including the composition of multinary compounds, distribution of the built-in electric field and the influence of perturbations such...
